Huntaway Farm Dogs
Developed in New Zealand as sheepdogs suitable for working around steep hills and large flocks, the Huntaway is very intelligent and has a great 'voice' -- one of the traits deliberately bred into the Huntaway is a loud bark suitable for controlling sheep and carrying long distances. This was particularly important in the steep hill country of New Zealand.
With varying sizes from medium to very large, and differing coat lengths and colours, the Huntaway is a friendly, calm dog with an easy temperament, very suited to working with all types of stock.
Having great stamina, Huntaways can run all day, usually in a easy-going lolloping stride. They are easily trained and can be taught to bark on command.
We have found their easygoing nature and friendliness to strangers makes them quite suitable as a family dog, providing they receive regular exercise.
They are not, however, good guard dogs, unless intruders are scared off by the thought of being licked to death or merely watched with amused interest!
Most of our Huntaways are black and tan, and are medium- to large-sized. Very suitable to all types of farms, and for active families willing to spend time exercising and playing with their dog.
Huntaways have few health problems, and a life expectancy of 12-14 years.
Willatook Park's Foundation stock of two dogs were imported into Australia from New Zealand, the dogs being selected from the 'old' breed foundation, noted for their willingness to please, durability to work even in hot weather, and their excellent nature.
